ABSTRACT

Background: After recovering from the acute phase of COVID-19, some of the infected children manifest long COVID symptoms. The present study aims to identify long COVID symptoms in children and adolescents admitted to hospitals in Bushehr, Iran, during 2021 to 2023, and compare them with the non-affected group. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted on 141 children and adolescents with COVID-19 and 141 non-affected peers. The data were collected using the data recorded in the patients’ records, conducting telephone interviews and completing the prevalent long COVID symptom form. Results: The mean age of the hospitalized children with COVID-19 was 79±5.24 months old, 57.4% of whom were boys. Also, 46 individuals of the infected group (32.6%) manifested long COVID symptoms. The most prevalent symptoms included fatigue (54.3%), impaired attention or concentration (41.3%) and depression or anxiety symptoms (34.7%). Significant correlation was found between disease severity and muscle and joint pain (P=0.025) as well as between length of hospital stay and cough (P=0.022), weight loss (P=0.047) and depression or anxiety symptoms (P=0.008). Older age [(6-11 y; OR=3.18, CI=1.03-9.88); (12≥ y; OR= 4.57, CI=1.40-14.96)] and having history of smoking or being exposed to secondhand smoke (OR= 12.45, CI= 3.14-49.36) were considered as risk factors for long COVID. Conclusions: Informing the public about smoking or being exposed to smoke as risk factors for long COVID, in addition to its other hazards, is of particular importance. Informing the healthcare staff and general public about the most prevalent symptoms of long COVID could be effective in timely diagnosis and treatment as well as reducing families’ stress burden.

ABSTRACT

One of the greatest COVID-19 related challenges for children and their families was managing distance learning due to school closures. We also know from previous research that families with a child with a neurodevelopmental disorder such as ADHD or ASD were struggling more than others, but also experiences some positive effects. However, few qualitative studies have been conducted. The present study therefore aimed to investigate parental experiences of negative and positive effects of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in a large sample of families with an adolescent with ADHD and/or ASD and a matched comparison group (n = 682). Data was collected through open-ended questions as part of a larger survey study. Five main themes, with different sub-themes were identified for both negative and positive effects: 1) Teaching, 2) Social, 3) Support, 4) Child factors, and 5) Home environment. In addiction, the main themes “Technical problems” were identified for negative effects. Families with a child with ADHD/ASD reported negative effects related to “Child factors” and “Support” more frequently than the controls, as well as negative effects related to some aspects of “Teaching” and “Technical problems”. Regarding positive effects, significant group differences were primarily found for the theme “Child factors”. These findings are discussed botn in terms of how to best prepare for possible future pandemics, but also how to best provide educational support for children with ADHD and/or ASD when schools are open.

ABSTRACT

AIM: Some of the patients with COVID-19 disease have persistent symptoms and there is limited information about the long-term health consequences of those who have recovered. The aim of this study is to investigate persistent symptoms of health care workers after COVID-19 disease and the relationship with demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients. METHOD: Healthcare workers who had symptomatic COVID-19 disease proven by RT-PCR and were diagnosed at least 12 weeks ago were included in the study. Demographic characteristics, comorbidities, symptoms at time of diagnosis and symptoms that persisted more than 3 weeks were examined in detail with a conducted questionnaire. RESULTS: Of 121 patients included in the study, the mean age was 33.5 (22-59) and the mean time since participants were diagnosed with COVID-19 disease was 30.3 weeks (12.7-56.9). 92% (n=112) of the participants were followed up as outpatients. 63.6% (n=77) of our patients had symptoms lasting more than 3 weeks and the most common symptom were fatigue , loss of smell and attention deficit/concentration disorder. 19 of 77 patients (24.6%) stated that their persistent symptoms lasted longer than 24 weeks, with the most common symptoms being loss of smell. CONCLUSION: All these findings show that even in young patients with mild and moderate COVID-19 infection, post-COVID symptoms are at a rate that will affect their quality of life and health services should be planned for the rehabilitation of these patients. WHAT’S KNOWN? The initial symptoms and clinical course of COVID-19 are well known, but information about the long-term follow-up post-COVİD symptoms, especially in mild and moderate patients, is limited. WHAT’S NEW? Our study contributes to the literature on the frequency of long-term symptoms at 3 months and 6 months in most young patients with mild COVID-19.It also provides data on the situation of post-COVID syndrome in Turkey.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has escalated mental health crises worldwide, with social isolation and economic instability contributing to a rise in suicidal behavior. Suicide can result from social factors such as shame, abuse, abandonment, and mental health conditions like depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, and bipolar disorders. As these conditions develop, signs of suicidal ideation may manifest in social media interactions. Analyzing social media data using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques can help identify patterns of suicidal behavior, providing invaluable insights for suicide prevention agencies, professionals, and broader community awareness initiatives. Machine learning algorithms for this purpose require large volumes of accurately labeled data. Previous research has not fully explored the potential of incorporating explanations in analyzing and labeling longitudinal social media data. In this study, we employed a model explanation method, Layer Integrated Gradients, on top of a fine-tuned state-of-the-art language model, to assign each token from Reddit users' posts an attribution score for predicting suicidal ideation. By extracting and analyzing attributions of tokens from the data, we propose a methodology for preliminary screening of social media posts for suicidal ideation without using large language models during inference.

ABSTRACT

Background Prominent symptoms of Gulf War illness (GWI), the disorder related to military service in the 1991 Gulf War (GW), include fatigue, pain, and cognitive dysfunction. Although anosmia is not a typical GWI symptom, anecdotally some veterans reported losing their sense smell shortly after the war. Because olfactory deficit is a prodromal symptom of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, and because we previously reported suggestive evidence that deployed GW veterans may be at increased risk for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and dementia, the current study examined the relationship between olfactory and cognitive function in deployed GW veterans.Methods Eighty deployed GW veterans (mean age: 59.9 ± 7.0; 4 female) were tested remotely with the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Veterans also completed self-report questionnaires about their health and deployment-related exposures and experiences. UPSIT and MoCA data from age-matched healthy controls (HC) were downloaded from the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) study for comparison.Results GW veterans had a mean UPSIT score of 27.8 ± 6.3 (range 9–37) and a mean MoCA score of 25.3 ± 2.8 (range 19–30). According to age- and sex-specific normative data, 31% of GW veterans (vs. 8% PPMI HCs) had UPSIT scores below the 10th percentile. Nearly half (45%) of GW veterans (vs. 8% PPMI HCs) had MoCA scores below the cut-off for identifying MCI. Among GW veterans, but not PPMI HCs, there was a positive correlation between UPSIT and MoCA scores (Spearman’s ρ = 0.39, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in UPSIT or MoCA scores between GW veterans with and without history of COVID and with and without Kansas GWI exclusionary conditions.Conclusions We found evidence of olfactory and cognitive deficits and a significant correlation between UPSIT and MoCA scores in a cohort of 80 deployed GW veterans. Because impaired olfactory function has been associated with increased risk for MCI and dementia, it may be prudent to screen aging, deployed GW veterans with smell identification tests so that hypo- and anosmic veterans can be followed longitudinally and offered targeted neuroprotective therapies as they become available.

ABSTRACT

Wearing masks in accordance with scientific guidelines is the most economically-effective protective measure for preventing respiratory diseases, such as COVID-19 and influenza, by interrupting viral transmission and safeguarding one's own health. In fact, researchers found that wearing masks can effectively reduce the infection rate of COVID-19 by 65%. However, this brings great inconvenience to face recognition, and human face recognition accuracy under occlusion conditions is low. Therefore, this paper proposes masked face recognition with BF-FaceNet and multi-view features. Firstly, in order to extract fine-grained features of the face region, ResNet50 is replaced by BoTNet as the backbone network of FaceNet. Secondly, a non-masked map is generated to accurately locate the non-masked area. Meanwhile, the face attention augmentation model (FAAM) is designed to extract local face features of the non-masked map. Thirdly, by combining loss function Ltriplet with Lattention, joint loss function Lface is proposed to improve the accuracy of masked recognition. Finally, experimental results on the publicly-available masked face dataset, SMFRD, demonstrate a significant improvement in recognition accuracy using our proposed algorithm compared to other methods.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between screen time and symptom severity in children with ADHD during the COVID-19 lockdown. METHODS: Caregivers of children with ADHD aged 7 to 16 years completed the screen time questionnaire and ADHD rating scales of the SNAP-IV-Thai version during and after the COVID-19 lockdown. The correlation between screen time and ADHD scores was assessed. RESULTS: Of the 90 children, aged 11.31 ± 2.29 years, enrolled, 74.4% were male, 64.4% were in primary school, and 73% had electronic screens in their bedrooms. After adjusting with other factors, recreational screen time, both on weekdays and on weekend days, were positively correlated with ADHD scores (both inattention and hyperactive/impulsive scores). Studying screen time, on the other hand, was not associated with ADHD symptom severity. Compared to during the lockdown, studying screen time decreased after the lockdown, but recreational screen time and ADHD scores were not changed. CONCLUSION: Increasing recreational screen time was associated with worsening ADHD symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Many studies have demonstrated the short-term efficacy and tolerability of methylphenidate treatment adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Qualitative literature on this matter focused on school outcomes, long-term side effects, family conflicts, personality changes and stigmatization. Yet, no qualitative study has crossed the perspectives of child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs) prescribing methylphenidate and adolescents with ADHD. This French qualitative study followed the five stages IPSE-Inductive Process to analyze the Structure of lived Experience-approach. Fifteen adolescents with ADHD and 11 CAPs were interviewed. Data collection by purposive sampling continued until data saturation was reached. Data analysis, based on a descriptive and structuring procedure to determine the structure of lived experience characterized by the central axes of experience, produced two axes: (1) The process of methylphenidate prescription, highlighting how this prescription was motivated from the exterior, experienced as passive by the adolescents and required commitment from the CAPs; and (2) the perceived effects of methylphenidate treatment, in three domains: at school, in relationships and in the sense of self. Findings raised both the issues of the epistemic position and social representation of the adolescents about ADHD and methylphenidate within this specific French context, and the self-awareness and perception of the adolescents with ADHD. We conclude that these two issues need to be regularly addressed by the CAPs prescribing methylphenidate to avoid epistemic injustice and prevent the harmful effects of stigmatization.

ABSTRACT

With the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, education systems worldwide, including higher education institutions, switched to remote learning in various modes, including recordings of lectures and lessons. Learning this way can be especially effective for students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) who have difficulties maintaining organization, focus, and concentration. Hence, this qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to examine the perceptions of 12 students with ADHD that studied from recorded lectures from the perspective of the symptoms that define this disorder. Findings showed that learning from recordings of lectures gave students a sense of control over the learning in terms of pace, place, time, and convenience. The research contributes to understanding how to tailor accessible remote learning to students with ADHD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND. Covid-19 pandemic has negatively impacted child and adolescent mental health. The primary outcome of this study was the evaluation of Covid-19 impact on minors’ hospitalizations in an acute psychiatric ward. METHOD. With an observational and retrospective design, we collected selected variables among adolescents hospitalized in an acute psychiatric ward from 01/07/2017 to 30/06/2022. Data were statistically processed. RESULTS. Our sample was composed of 118 minors with an average age of 15.7 ± 1.2 SD, mostly represented by females (61%) and Italians (60.2%), who had 204 hospitalizations. The number of admissions by years drastically decreased in 2020 concomitantly with Covid19 lockdown and increased in the first half of 2022. Admission rates were higher in winter and spring, except in 2020 when admissions decreased (p = 0.000). In our sample, females more frequently had suicidal behaviour and acute anxiety (p = 0.000) at admissions and more often were discharged with acute stress reactions, eating disorders and mood disorder diagnoses. Differently, males were more frequently hospitalized for aggressive behaviour (p = 0.000) and were more often discharged with ADHD diagnosis (p = 0.000). At multiple linear regression, the duration of hospitalization (dependent variable) was negatively associated with “pandemic period” (p = 0.017) and “absent aggressive behaviour” (p = 0.003), and positively with “autism” diagnosis (p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS. We highlighted the more stressful impact of Covid-19 pandemic on female adolescents, who required more psychiatric hospitalizations, in particular for suicidal behaviour, anxiety and mood disorders.

ABSTRACT

Despite inattention being one of the most common symptoms of Post-COVID-19 Syndrome (PCS), there is a gap in the literature regarding its treatment. This report presents a case of attentional symptoms and fatigue that emerged after the SARS-CoV-2 infection. The symptoms were similar to ADHD in adults, although the 61-year-old patient had never experienced inattention symptoms before. The patient was initially treated with Methylphenidate and then Lisdexamfetamine. Both were adapted to the needs and treatment response presented by the patient. After several changes in the therapeutic regimen, including the addition of Bupropion, the patient achieved remission of his symptoms. This case highlights the importance of treating PCS inattention and fatigue as an ADHD-like syndrome, despite the evident different etiology of symptoms. It would be necessary to replicate these findings to confirm our results, thus benefiting other patients currently affected by this syndrome.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: ADHD is associated with suboptimal health behaviors including physical activity (PA). LEAP is a parent BMT group program enhanced to focus on health behaviors, integrated with mHealth technology. Little is known about implementing BMT via telemedicine "telegroups." METHODS: Children ages 5 to 10 with ADHD and their caregiver wore activity trackers and participated in an 8 to 9 week parent BMT and social media group emphasizing PA, sleep, and screen use. A 7-day child accelerometer-wear and parent and teacher measures were completed pre- and post-group. Groups were in-person prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and in telegroup format during the pandemic. RESULTS: Thirty-three families participated in person and 23 participated via virtual telegroup. Group attendance was superior for telegroup with equivalent satisfaction and skill use. Changes in health behavior and clinical outcomes were equivalent. CONCLUSIONS: LEAP is a feasible and novel BMT intervention that can be delivered in an accessible telegroup format with high participation and acceptability.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have estimated the real prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) in Spain and worldwide. However, there are disparate prevalence figures. We consider research in this field essential to improve early detection, secondary prevention, and health planning. METHODS: The Minikid ADHD and TICS-Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents, the Autism Spectrum Quotient (Children's version, AQ- Child) and a protocol of general medical questions were administered for screening purposes. The PROLEXIA battery for children aged from 4 to 6 years was used for direct assessments. Parents provided information on emotional, medical, and school aspects. The final population evaluated using these tools consisted of 291 6-year-old subjects. RESULTS: The overall risk of presenting with a neurodevelopmental disorder was 55.4%. A 23.4% risk of presenting with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in any modality (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and combined), a 2.8% risk of developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a 30.6% risk of presenting with a learning disorder with reading difficulties, a 5.5% risk of tics and a 22.5% risk of language problems (incomprehensible language or minor language problems) were detected in the sample. The most common combination of disorders was learning and language difficulties, accounting for 6.9% of the sample. The second most frequent combination was the presence of learning and language difficulties and ADHD, accounting for 4.5% of the sample. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of risks detected in our sample seems to be consistent with national and international studies. A significant proportion of our sample had never been previously diagnosed (85%), so early detection programs are recommended.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is known to be a risk factor for antisocial and delinquent behaviour, but there is still a lack of information on how features of ADHD relate to offending behaviour among adults not already defined by their offending. AIMS: Our aim was to add to knowledge about relationships between ADHD and antisocial behaviour among adults in the general population by answering the following questions: (A) Does the level of self-reported ADHD features relate to criminal and non-criminal antisocial behaviour? (B) To what extent are self-ratings of ADHD features independent of socio-demographic features previously identified as predictors of antisocial behaviour? METHODS: A sample of adults was originally recruited to study public response to the COVID-19 outbreak through an online panel to be representative of the Israeli population. Among other scales, the 2025 participants completed an ADHD self-report scale, an antisocial behaviour self-report scale and a socio-demographic questionnaire probing for age, gender, urbanity, place of birth, socioeconomic status (education and income), family status (being in a relationship and having children) and religiosity. RESULTS: Higher mean totals for the inattention and hyperactivity ADHD scale scores were associated with higher mean antisocial behaviour scores. These relationships were only slightly affected by socio-demographic variables, including sex, age, education and income. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that not only may features of ADHD, even below a diagnostic threshold, constitute a risk factor for antisocial behaviour, but also that the self-rated levels of these problems covary. These findings are important for informing the early detection of risk of antisocial behaviour in the general population and its prevention.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic uprooted regular routines forcing many children to learn from home, requiring many adults to work from home, and cutting families off from support outside the home. Public health restrictions associated with the pandemic caused widespread psychological distress including depression and anxiety, increased fear, panic, and stress. These trends are particularly concerning for families raising neuroatypical children such as those with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as these children are already more likely than their typically developing peers to experience comorbid mental health issues, and to experience greater distress when required to stay indoors. Families with children who have ADHD are also at greater risk for experiencing heightened familial stress due to the challenges associated with managing ADHD behavioural symptoms, greater parental discord and divorce, and greater financial difficulties compared to other families. The current study engaged families comprised of at least one child diagnosed with ADHD to elucidate 1) the unique ways that the COVID-19 pandemic affected their mental health and 2) the specific barriers these families faced to maintaining optimal mental wellbeing. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A total of 33 participants (15 parent-child dyads) engaged in virtual interviews. Content analysis revealed that the most frequently identified mental health effects for families were increased child anxiety and disconnectedness, as well as deteriorating parental mental health. The most frequently identified barriers to maintaining optimal mental wellbeing were lack of routine, lack of social interaction and social supports, and uncertainty and fear. CONCLUSIONS: Findings underscore areas of need during times of large-scale social isolation, specifically for families with children who have ADHD. This work contributes to a growing body of research aimed at creating safeguards to support mental wellbeing for vulnerable families during times of crisis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Emerging research suggests that the Covid-19 pandemic has disproportionately and adversely affected children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this meta-analysis is to consolidate the findings from studies that examined changes in ADHD symptoms from before to during the pandemic. METHOD: Database searches of PsycINFO, ERIC, PubMed, and ProQuest were used to identify relevant studies, theses, and dissertations. RESULTS: A total of 18 studies met specific inclusion criteria and were coded based on various study characteristics. Twelve studies examined ADHD symptoms longitudinally and six studies assessed ADHD symptoms retroactively and during the pandemic. Data from 6,491 participants from 10 countries were included. Results indicated that many children and/or their caregivers reported an increase in child ADHD symptoms during the Covid-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: This review points to a global increase in ADHD symptoms and has implications for the prevalence and management of ADHD during the post-pandemic recovery.

ABSTRACT

Globally, the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is increasing. The treatment for ADHD is multifaceted and requires long-term care and support. Pharmacists are capable of assisting patients and their caretakers in achieving desired outcomes. This work discusses and summarizes pharmacists' roles in ADHD care and their associated outcomes. Overall, pharmacists are positioned to educate on ADHD, optimize medications in a collaborative practice model, manage and monitor side effects, and provide remote and virtual pharmaceutical care. Pharmacists could directly contribute to ensuring medication safety and increasing awareness regarding the optimal use of ADHD medications. Patients with ADHD can benefit from pharmacist involvement in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to, initial screening and referral, the provision of clinical consultation and feedback, and the improvement of self-management and self-awareness of the illness. Pharmacists also play a significant role in therapeutic decision making regarding the initiation, intensification, and monitoring of ADHD treatment to ensure its effectiveness and quality of life improvement. Lastly, pharmacists could help identify more cost-effective treatment approaches for ADHD patients based on the clinical scenario that is encountered.

ABSTRACT

Prescription stimulant use, primarily for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), has increased among adults in the United States during recent decades, while remaining stable or declining among children and adolescents (1,2). MarketScan commercial claims data were analyzed to describe trends in prescription stimulant fills before and during the COVID-19 pandemic (2016-2021) by calculating annual percentages of enrollees aged 5-64 years in employer-sponsored health plans who had one or more prescription stimulant fills overall and by sex and age group. Overall, the percentage of enrollees with one or more prescription stimulant fills increased from 3.6% in 2016 to 4.1% in 2021. The percentages of females aged 15-44 years and males aged 25-44 years with prescription stimulant fills increased by more than 10% during 2020-2021. Future evaluation could determine if policy and health system reimbursement changes enacted during the pandemic contributed to the increase in stimulant prescriptions. Stimulants can offer substantial benefits for persons with ADHD, but also pose potential harms, including adverse effects, medication interactions, diversion and misuse, and overdoses. Well-established clinical guidelines exist for ADHD care, but only for children and adolescents* (3); clinical practice guidelines for adult ADHD could help adults also receive accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that pediatric tuina, a modality of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), might have beneficial effects on the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), such as overall improvements in concentration, flexibility, mood, sleep quality, and social functioning. This study was conducted to understand the facilitators and barriers in the delivery of pediatric tuina by parents to children with ADHD symptoms. METHODS: This is a focus group interview embedded in a pilot randomized controlled trial on parent-administered pediatric tuina for ADHD in preschool children. Purposive sampling was employed to invite 15 parents who attended our pediatric tuina training program to participate voluntarily in three focus group interviews. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The data were analyzed through template analysis. RESULTS: Two themes were identified: (1) facilitators of intervention implementation and (2) barriers to intervention implementation. The theme of the facilitators of intervention implementation included the subthemes of (a) perceived benefits to children and parents, (b) acceptability to children and parents, (c) professional support, and (d) parental expectations of the long-term effects of the intervention. The theme of barriers to intervention implementation included the subthemes of (a) limited benefits for children's inattention symptoms, (b) manipulation management difficulties, and (c) limitations of TCM pattern identification. CONCLUSION: Perceived beneficial effects on the children's sleep quality and appetite and parent-child relationships, as well as timely and professional support, mainly facilitated the implementation of parent-administered pediatric tuina. Slow improvements in the children's inattention symptoms and the possible inaccuracies of online diagnosis were the dominant barriers of the intervention. Parents have high expectations for the provision of long-term professional support during their practice of pediatric tuina. The intervention presented here can be feasibly used by parents.
